CSA Week 8: When farmers go on vacation…

Your farmers pose for a selfie while swimming in the Boundary Waters.

Welcome to Week 8 of the 2025 summer CSA season. This week is a Group B week, which means full shares in all locations pick up and half shares at the farm pick up.

In their shares this week, members will receive the following vegetables: Beets, carrots, snap peas, cherry tomatoes (for farm pickup only), dill, cucumbers (slicing and pickling), Hungarian hot wax peppers and scallions. Shares may also include summer squash and salad mix, depending on yield.

The online store is open this week, offering flower bouquets, fresh herbs, green cabbage, kohlrabi and pickling cucumbers by the quart. The store also has farm gear and Heather-Marie’s linoleum block prints. Please place orders by 10 a.m. Tuesday morning to allow for processing.

This newsletter includes a roundup of news from the farm as well as information and recipes. Feel free to jump to the bottom of the newsletter to find the section titled, “This week’s veggies and recipes.”

News from the OFF the farm!

Your farmers and their gear in the Boundary Waters.

If you wanted to, you could work from sunrise to sunset every day of the growing season at the farm and still never be done.

Or, you can decide to go camping.

The sun setting on Nina Moose Lake.

For the first time since we’ve been farming together, last year, we decided to take some time for ourselves during the growing season and go to a place that is special to both of us: The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.

It was buggy and hot and we brought way too many vegetables, so our packs were quite heavy. And it was a wonderful time.

Sunset at our favorite campsite on Agnes Lake where we stayed for three nights.

We also acknowledge that this could not happen without the help and support of our farm manager, Kristina. She is in her second year working with us at the farm and has become invaluable for her knowledge, curiosity and passion. While we were gone, she was harvesting snap peas, cucumbers and squash and also looking for ways to help us deal with some insect issues we have been having this year. Thank you, Kristina, for all that you do for us.

Come have cider with your farmers!

Summary: Meet your farmers for a cider at Duluth Cider. This cidery is owned by our friends Val and Jake, who also happen to be members of our CSA.  This is a chance for your farmers to relax and for everyone to hang out and have a pint of either alcoholic or nonalcoholic beverages.  We can even play bingo if people are up for that.

  • Date: Tuesday, July 29 (Please note new date.)
  • Time: 6 p.m.
  • Location: Duluth Cider

This week’s veggies and recipes

On our trip to the Boundary Waters, we paddled, we swam, we watched the sunset. And, we ate a lot of vegetables.

As you scroll through these photos, we hope our trip inspires you to always think about how you can add fresh vegetables to anything. Keep it fresh. Keep it simple.

Sliced kohlrabi, radishes and cucumbers were lightly salted and allowed to rest for a half hour before becoming a snack that was delicious, dipped in a spice mix called Tajin.
John is happy cooking in any environment.
We made falafels from a mix and served them on a bed of cabbage (lightly massaged with salt), and a quick pickle mix of cucumbers, Hungarian hot wax peppers, dill, salt and pepper. The sauce is a mixture of tahini, lemon juice, olive oil and a jalapeno pepper.
A simple ramen packet enhanced with snap peas, scallions and carrots.
