Fall Share Week 1: Summer and fall favorites abound

Welcome to Week 1 of this year’s Fall share. This week all one-week Fall Share customers will pick up as well as all three-week subscribers.

In their shares this week, members will receive the following vegetables: leeks, garlic, red and yellow onions, sage, carrots, gold potatoes, russet potatoes, head lettuce, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, slicing cucumbers, delicata squash, slicing tomatoes and a small mixture of hot peppers.

Here’s a few important items:

  • Please pay attention at pickup. We’ll have most of your share in boxes, but with the Fall Share, we sometimes need to have other items set out separately. This week, one of those items will be stalks of Brussels sprouts, which are just too big to fit in a box.
  • One-week subscribers will have their names on specific boxes and will receive one additional winter squash (full share subscribers will get more squashes in the following two deliveries).
  • Are you a new CSA member? If you are, scroll to the bottom of this newsletter to the “Delivery day and pickup sites” section for an overview of how our delivery days work and other FAQs. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to email us ([email protected]).
Reminder: Flower bouquets still available on online store

This season’s extended warmth means we can continue to offer both sunflower and mixed flower bouquets. This week, we have a few remaining sunflower bouquets ($15) and mixed bouquets ($20). The mixed bouquets include dahlias, snap dragons, celosia, hibiscus and more.

Potato shares are back this season

We’re excited to announce that our russet potato crop is looking great this year, which means we’ll be able to sell larger shares of storage potatoes to members. Stay tuned for details on when those will be available.

Notes about the Fall Share

It’s been a pretty glorious stretch of weather we’ve been enjoying at the farm, which has allowed many of our vegetables to stretch well into fall. It also means, we’re very excited about the three weeks of vegetables we have for you this growing season.

We know the Fall Share is a favorite for many (us, too) because it means a bounty of crops, including pumpkins, squash, onions and potatoes — that can be stored for the winter months.

This first week of the fall share is a transitional week for us. We’ll still be including some favorites, such as lettuce, cucumbers and tomatoes, but we’ll also be giving you some of the fall favorites: russet potatoes, leeks and Brussels sprouts to name just a few.

We harvested all of our winter squash and pumpkins last week and have them curing in our greenhouse. This ensures that they can be stored for longer periods of time.

Delicata squash

This week, we are going to start with delicata squash, which, as the name implies, is a delicate squash that does not store well. It is a delicious squash. You don’t need to peel it and really it tastes best just sauteed with a little olive oil, butter and perhaps some garlic and sage.

The following two weeks, boxes will include winter squash and pie pumpkins that have cured and can be stored for longer periods of time. We’ll include information about each squash and how best to care for them.

This week’s vegetables and recipes

Potato Leek Soup

from the cookbook “Enchanted Broccoli Forest”

A true sign of fall!  This recipe is great and easy to add kale and other veggies.

  • 3 medium sized potatoes
  • 3 cups cleaned, chopped leeks
  • 1 medium stalk celery, chopped
  • 1 large carrot, chopped
  • 4 cups water
  • 1 ½ tsp salt
  • 1 cup milk
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • OPTIONAL: snippets of fresh herbs, cooked greens (kale, spinach, etc)

Scrub the potatoes and cut them into 1-inch chunks.  Place them in a soup pot or Dutch oven with the leeks, celery, carrot, water, and salt.  Bring to a boil, cover, and cook until the potatoes are tender (about 20 minutes).  Remove from heat, and let it cool until it’s no longer too hot to puree.

Puree the soup in a blender or food processor (you’ll need to do this in batches).  Return the puree to the pot.  Stir in the milk.

Add black pepper to taste, and adjust salt, if necessary.  Serve hot or cold, possibly topped with a sprinkling of fresh herbs.

Delicata Squash Tacos

From Happy Acre Farm

  • 1 delicata squash
  • 2 sweet peppers, sliced in strips
  • ½ -1  jalapeno, minced
  • 1 medium candy onion, sliced
  • 1 tsp Garam Masala
  • Handful parsley, minced
  • Homemade guacamole
  • 2-3 limes
  • High heat oil
  • Salt and pepper
  • Tortillas

Preheat the oven to 350. Heat 3 ½ tablespoons oil in a skillet over medium high heat. Add the peppers and sautee, stirring every so often, until soft, 15-18 minutes. When they are nearly done, squeeze a lime over them.

Take the delicata and slice it lengthwise, scoop out the seeds and slice the two halves into thin crescents. Take the seeds, toss them in oil and place in a small baking dish, when ready bake until golden brown, 10-15 minuets. Once they’re out of the oven toss with salt and let cool.

Heat  ¼ cup oil in a skillet over medium high heat. Add the garam masala and fry it for a minute, making sure to stay nearby and stir frequently. Add the onions, reduce the heat to medium-low, cook for 5 minutes. Add the delicata, stirring to coat in the garam masala oil combination, cover with a lid and let cook. Check 10 minutes later, stir, cover again and let cook until they’re soft, and have a nice brown caramelization, 5-10 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool, salt to taste.

Heat the tortillas, then place on a large platter. Layer the delicata and the red peppers. Top with a dab of guacamole, some roasted seeds, a sprinkle of parsley and a good squeeze of lime.
