My day volunteering at the farm

Sam Laderman learns how to use the tiller to plant potatoes as her father, Scott, looks on.

Editor’s note: Recently, Sam Laderman, a rising eighth-grader, came to the farm to volunteer with her parents. We asked her to write about her day at the farm. Sam also reports that her favorite vegetable is spinach. Thanks for the help, Sam!

When I first arrived at the farm and was greeted by Heather-Marie and John, they helped us to split jobs.

My mom and I (with Heather-Marie) got fertilizer, which my mom and Heather-Marie spread out on the soil.

While they did that, I learned from John how to work the tiller. I then proceeded to do a little bit of work with the tiller (It was pretty hard and was a little heavy, so I couldn’t do too much, which led to my dad taking over).

After that I helped transplant tomatoes into larger containers which would eventually go out to the farmland to be planted. During that time I found out that the stem is actually a part of the root, that was cool to learn!

Sam Laderman plants potatoes while her parents, Scott and Jill, plant them.

After spending the morning working in the fields, Sam and her parents joined farmer Heather-Marie on a hike out along a trail at the farm to look for birds and other critters.

Afterwards I started to get hungry so I had a little snack that we packed. I called my grandpa and was talking to him for a while, so John set me up in a hammock, which was very nice.

After that we had lunch. It was nice because it wasn’t sandwiches but an assortment of food that was really good when I ate them together.  We then went out and planted potatoes.

We played Disney music while planting and it was really funny! My parents and I got a little tour of the land and went on a walk, and then we had to head home.

I had an amazing day! Even though bugs had bitten me I still had a good time!
